Private Party

Author(s): Veronica Coopman-Dewis

Poetry

"When you've eaten

four vanilla slices

two lamingtons

three cherry ripes

half a kilo of cheese

half a loaf of bread

a bowl of ice cream

and

500 grams of yoghurt

in the space of two hours

you mist lie

on our left side

with your stomach

well supported

until the nausea stops

before you can eat

whatever else

is left in the house."

For Veronica, food has become more important than boys, books, or birthdays. But she knows things have gone too far when she is mugged by a peice of cake in her own kitchen.

Like a packet of Tim Tams waiting in the cupboard, Private Party is a special treat. It's naughty and its funny--resist if you can!
