Martin Smith (1932–90) was journalist, poet, playwright, Jewish historian and gay historian. He was an eccentric in a nation lacking in eccentrics. From a gay and lesbian perspective, his efforts at writing gay and lesbian history, however imperfect, constitutes his most enduring achievement. He attempted to chronicle and develop a gay culture.
Paul Knobel, poet and historian, has searched the archives to come up with the first mongraph on one of our community's pioneer activists and historians.
